2022 was a year of celebration!

Dumbarton UMC 250th Anniversary!

2022 was Dumbarton’s Big 250 Year Celebration as a gathered group of faithful Methodists in Georgetown, Washington, DC.

Dumbarton United Methodist Church joyfully celebrated its 250th birthday in 2022 as the oldest continuous Methodist congregation in Washington DC, and one of the oldest in the nation. The year was filled with events calling on the church to be “Looking Backward But Living Forward.”

Our year-long Celebration included the following events:

  • October 16, 2022: Homecoming Celebration! Singing the “Dumbarton Hymn” written by Rev. Dr. Phil Wogaman
  • November 6, 2022: All Saints Day Worship Service. Dramatic reading of the names of our “cloud of witnesses” (prominent figures in Dumbarton history) and choir performance of AJ Welch’s composition inspired by the historic stained glass windows
  • November 15, 2022: Veterans History Day featuring the names on the WWII brass plaque.
  • December 24, 2022: Dumbarton UMC 250th Anniversary! We celebrated with birthday cake and preparing a time capsule with historic items and notes to future Dumbartonians. It was affixed inside the west steeple of the church attic.
