RiverSmart Award to Dumbarton

Dumbarton UMC has been awarded a grant from DC's Dept. of Energy and Environment's RiverSmart Communities Program, an initiative administered by the Anacostia Watershed Society (AWS) that focuses on effective stormwater treatment and emphasizes community engagement and outreach which enriches the installation of stormwater projects.

This grant will allow Dumbarton, with guidance from AWS, to make church property improvements that that will reduce pollution to local waterways, reduce stormwater fees, and educate the public about water pollution.

Dumbarton proposed a series of property improvements (called stormwater practices) for the church front and playground, including pervious pavement, bayscaping using native and pollinator-friendly plants, shade trees and a rain catchment system. As a next step, DUMC and the project team from AWS will do a walk-through of the church property to assess feasibility and scale of these proposed improvements, and design an installation plan.

Here is an overall timeline for the project:

- Kickoff and Concept Design Review Meetings: Early to Mid-May

- Final Concept Review Meetings: Mid to Late May

- Construction Document Work/Permitting/Project Bidding: June - August, 2018

- Project installations: September through November 2018

- Maintenance Program Review: December 2018.
