Director of Music Ministry Opening

JOB DESCRIPTION: Director of Music Ministry Music is an important part of the life of the Dumbarton United Methodist Church community.

The Director of Music Ministry collaborates with clergy, staff, choir members, other musicians, and members of the congregation in order to provide this important ministry to the congregation and the community. DUMC is a progressive, small membership church located in Georgetown, Washington, DC. It has strong lay leadership and lots of musical and sound technology talent.

We appreciate good music, love to sing, and understand music leadership not as performance but as a very important part of worship. The person in this position needs to be flexible, organized and enjoy working as a team member. This is a part-time position (15 hours/week). The annual salary range is $18,000-$22,000, commensurate with experience.

The person who fills this position must work on Sundays and be available for special services -- for example: Ash Wednesday; Maundy Thursday; Good Friday; Easter Vigil; Christmas Eve; and memorial services; weddings as requested, and at the Music Director’s discretion. The director will play regularly for Sunday morning worship. Six (6) Sundays per year may be taken for personal leave.

The director is responsible for finding substitutes on these occasions. For the first half of 2021, Dumbarton Church services are expected to continue in a virtual mode, with an anticipated return to live services later in the year – probably with a continuing virtual access. The person who fills this job will: •

--Demonstrate proficiency in piano and choir directing via references and audition. • Proficiency in organ and/or other instruments and experience with asynchronous recording projects optional, but appreciated.

• Be comfortable in a Christian setting; be familiar with Christian beliefs and practices.

• Be part of the ministry team at DUMC:

o Meet regularly with appointed pastor and worship cluster to plan music for worship events

o Attend staff meetings, depending on work schedule

o Collaborate with pastor and other musicians from the congregation and community

o Keep music library in order and prepare annual music budget

• Develop musical offerings for worship that are linked to worship themes and encourages lay participation:

o Plan repertoire and prepare/conduct Adult Choir

o Collaborate with Guitar Choir o Nurture and encourage talent, both vocal and instrumental

o Encourage musicians of all age levels - adults, youth, and children

• Create opportunities for children and youth to participate in musical offerings (in coordination with parents) o Soloists o Children/Youth Choirs

• Be familiar with a broad repertoire of music related to faith and spirituality, Methodist hymnody and world music o Music from different countries

o A variety of genres: traditional, folk, pop, classical

• Participate in occasional seasonal DUMC events

• Must pass background check
